Creating a successful garden involves so much more than planting seeds and watering schedules. To maintain a healthy growing and producing garden you want to take into consideration a variety of different things from soil texture, sunlight exposure, and water accessibility to animal access in this blog we will talk talk about some of those things and share different resources to help you pick the best spot for your garden!

When I first decided to begin gardening,  I took straight to my backyard. My family and I were extremely lucky when purchasing our home and have a large backyard space that I knew one day I would want to turn into a garden utopia. While I still have a long way to go toward utopia I do have a really nice space for my garden. The space I chose (pictured to the left) for two main reasons: sun exposure and fencing. I knew I wanted to grow vegetables and herbs that required a lot of sun like citrus and potatoes but also needed to keep our family dog out of the garden -he loves a fresh dirt spot to practice his digging-; so this fenced in corner became the spot! But it was only a short while into my gardening journey that I found out that birds, raccoons, and even possums will help themselves to your ripe fruits and veggies when they get the chance. Thankfully I have found a lot of way to at least reduce the number of pesky critters enjoying my garden. The simplest way I have found is getting small wire trash cans and some kind of anchor ( I like these giant ground staple things!) and placing the trashcan over your growing plant and then securing it to keep the trashcan form being lifted up.

Like I mentioned earlier, fencing was a huge reason why I chose this section of yard for a garden. It is not uncommon for household pets or wild animals to get curious about your garden space. My favorite ways to deter unwanted guests are with fencing, raised garden beds, and herbs! There are so many plants that you can pair together that will not only encourage plant growth but also prevent cats and raccoons from digging up your radishes! My favorites are the aromatics mint and lemon balm I keep each in pots on the outer edges of my garden beds, keeps the stray cats from digging in the beds wonderfully!

From understanding soil texture to managing sunlight exposure and animal access, every aspect plays a vital role in maintaining a thriving garden. Whether through fencing, raised beds, or companion planting there are so many ways for you to safeguard your garden space and help you create the garden of your dreams! Happy planting!
